CG Barn Conversion

The brief for this project was to reuse the existing barn structure and convert it into a residential unit.
The design approach was highly influenced by the existing barn, as the idea was to preserve its character and change the minimum as possible, whilst create a house that meets the current living standards. The layout was the result of the existing configuration, just adding a some openings and a vertical communication on one of the wings, where a loft story was possible. The biggest challenge was the lack of light into the structure, also because we tried to restrain the use of large external glazed areas, that would compromise the modesty and integrity of the barn. This was solved, adding rooflights on the lower wing and dormers on the other. At the ground floor level, the living areas get the light through large panes of windows that are sheltered by external timber louvres, mimicking the existing horizontal timber cladding.
